Solution snared a bunch of cool bands in the late 80's, most of
them either originally from or still based in Ippo Rock City as
it goes, Stupids, Bad Dress Sense, Space Maggots, Perfect Daze,
Frankfurter, quite the nifty collection. So anyway, people drifted
between bands, guested on each other's records and generally had
fun, and eventually four nimrods from some of these bands mutated
into Lovejunk at the start of the 90's. Since then these palookas
have also been in Chocolate, Fun City, the Rists and have continued
their occasional hardcore band the Coolest Retards, but still
they've never stopped being in Lovejunk, releasing the 'Dare To
Be Wrong' 12" and 'All We Have To Do Is Stay Together' 7"
as well as appearing on a load of comps and touring w/ their pals
like Mega City Four, Senseless Things, Snuff, Les Thugs and more.
Never
ones for the easy life, Lovejunk endured a few years of problems,
records not coming out til the tour was over, a drummer getting
ill and finally having to leave, vans breaking and deals falling
through, but things started to happen again when they recorded
a Peel Session and appeared on one of High Society's cool British
Punk Invasion comps, leading them into an ill-fated (and absurdly
typical) deal w/ Phoenix records, where our zeros recorded a full
CD, sat around on promises waiting for it to come out and then
heard that the label had gone bust. Maybe it's stubbornness. Maybe
belief in what they're doing. More likely it's blind stupidity.
Whatever, Lovejunk could have just thought 'fuck this' and called
it a day, but having decided the options were either keep going
or just spend the rest of their lives watching TV and developing
unhealthy crushes on soap stars they stuck w/ it, played some
of their patent ragged but rocking shows, got on some more comps
and were finally rescued by the good people at Crackle, all of
which brings us to Tribulations, Lovejunk's brand new CD. Taped
in Norwich in the middle of June (average studio temperature -
90 degrees), Tribulations is a punchy and powerful example of
what Lovejunk are good at, fast catchy songs, poppy melodies and
crunching guitars, mixing up their Replacements, Ramones, Husker
Du, Descendents and early Soul Asylum influences into a good time
sonic blast that people have recently described as being like
Weezer on speed. So if it's rock and roll ruined by stupid ska
parts, crappy heavy metal that calls itself 'hardcore' to try
and sell records to people under 35, droning emo garbage made
by people too scared to drink beer or any of that other fashionable
bland faddery that yr looking for then sorry, keep looking. If
you want some short, fast and memorable tunes where guitars scuzz
and howl, drums pound and out front there's a singer who can actually
sing then Lovejunk could well be the band you need to host yr
next keggers party. So pour yourself another large one, spin Tribulations
and you know, get a little fun into your life.
